Moments later, Zayn Malik took to social media to share his lengthy tribute, along with a sweet photo of him and Liam sleeping together.
He wrote: 'Liam, I found myself talking to you out loud, hoping you would hear me, I couldn't help but selfishly think that we had so many more conversations in our lives.
'I can't thank you enough for supporting me through some of the most difficult times in my life.
'When I was 17 and missing home, you always had a positive attitude, a reassuring smile and let me know that you were my friend and that I was loved.
'Even though you were younger than me, you were always smarter than me. You were stubborn, stubborn and never spoke ill of people.
'So, even though we've clashed a few times, I've always secretly respected you for that.
When it comes to music Liam, you are the most qualified in every way, in comparison I know nothing, I am a new guy with no experience, you are already a professional.
'I'm always happy to know that no matter what happens on stage, we can always count on you to know which direction to steer the ship next.
'I lost a brother when you left us and I can't explain to you what I would give to hug you one last time, say goodbye properly and tell you that I love and respect you so much.
'I will always treasure all the memories I have with you in my heart and there are no words to justify or explain how I feel now except devastated.
'Wherever you are now, I hope you are well and at peace and that you know how much you are loved. I love you brother.'
