Liberal talk show host Bill Maher said he's not worried about former President Trump winning or targeting the 2024 race if he returns to the White House, saying he's not allowing himself to panic about the election this time.
On his “Club Random Podcast”. on Sunday, Maher debated his guest Dr. Phil McGraw on a variety of topics, including illegal immigration, anti-Israel extremism on college campuses, and the current polarization in America.
At one point, Dr. Phil addressed Maher's strong feelings about the former president, asking the liberal host what he would do “if Trump wins.”
“Nothing,” Maher replied. “Nothing. Every week I will continue my program and make jokes at his expense.
“And that's why it's a great country. Because even though he's crazy, you know, he didn't do anything about it the first time. So I'm just not going to lose my nerve over this,” he continued.
Maher immediately clarified that he still believed the former president was capable of imprisoning his critics.
“Now he could. He's crazy, so he might start sending people to Guantanamo Bay. I don’t put anything past this guy,” Maher continued.
“He thinks they eat cats and dogs. But will I worry about it? First of all, I'm not going to worry about it, Phil, because he won't win anyway,” Maher argued.
After the September presidential debate, Maher confidently predicted that Trump's electoral chances were “over” and that Vice President Kamala Harris would win the November election.
“I'm known as a Trump alarmist, and now I say I'm not even nervous,” he told Dr. Phil on the podcast.
“It will be close. The polls will be dead even on election day,” he said.
Maher argued that Americans had grown tired of the former president for years and had reached a breaking point.
“We may be talking about a few hundred thousand people, but I think it will be a little closer,” he said of the razor-thin race.
In March, Maher said he would do “everything in my power” to stop Trump from winning in November.
At the time, he wasn't sure whether President Biden or Trump would win the election. He joked that Trump would either “blow up the world or put me in Guantanamo Bay or something” if he was re-elected, adding, “but I just can't keep worrying about it.”
With just over three weeks until Election Day, three new national polls suggest Trump is erasing the gains Harris has made in the last few months since she replaced Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket in 2024.
Harris led Trump 50% to 48% among likely voters polled in the ABC News/Ipsos poll, down from the vice president's six-point lead last month.
According to NBC News, support for both candidates is 48%. poll of registered voters nationwide after Harris had a five-point lead a month ago.
Additionally, a non-probability-based CBS News/YouGov survey of likely voters showed Harris with a three-point lead over Trump, down slightly from a four-point lead a month ago.
