Feminist musical produced by Hillary Clinton, ending its Broadway run due to financial problems

'Enough', a feminist musical produced by former first lady and secretary of state Hillary Clinton, is ending its run on Broadway due to financial problems, according to the New York Times.

The decision was announced on Friday evening by the producers of the musical about the women's suffrage movement. According to Securities and Exchange Commission documents reviewed by the Los Angeles Times, the capitalization of “Suffs” was $19 million gross, but this amount could not be recovered.

For the week ending Oct. 6, the musical grossed only $679,589, which isn't usually enough to sustain a Broadway show with a large cast. The show debuted in April, but just two weeks after its official launch, it struggled to fill all the seats.

This is evidenced by data from the week of May 5 Art produced by Clinton this week, it only reached 81% capacity for eight performances.

Competing with “Romeo and Juliet,” “Sweeney Todd” and “Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” “Suffs” was in the bottom 23% of all 35 Broadway shows for the week of May 5.

By the end of its Broadway premiere, “Suffs” will have had 24 opening nights and 301 performances – slightly fewer than the average Broadway musical.

“Suffs” last performs on Broadway on January 5. The musical will then go on a nationwide tour, starting in Seattle in September 2025, reports the Los Angeles Times.

In addition to the former First Lady, Malala Yousafzai also produced the musical. In July, a group of radical protesters interrupted a performance of “Suffs” and called the musical “a betrayal of the next generation of feminists.”

“WE REJECT this version again white feminism” – we read on the group's website. “This action is led by an autonomous group of radical, anti-racist and queer feminists.”

Despite its relatively short run for a Broadway musical, “Suffs” received positive reviews from critics and won Tony Awards in June for best book and best score. Clinton referenced her 2016 defeat in her awards show performance.

“Now I have performed on many stages, but this one is special.” Clinton said before introducing the performers.

“And I kind of know how difficult it is to make changes,” she added, referring to Trump's presidential win. “It's almost impossible to imagine what a challenge (women's suffrage) was, but it's an election year now and we need to be reminded how important it is to vote.”
