Cyclops he was the leader of the X-Men for many years, fighting against the likes of Magneto and Watchtowers. But now Cyclops has essentially become the new Professor X, with no one to turn to but himself – and he's in trouble. So much so, in fact, that Cyclops may be well on his way to becoming a leader his past self wouldn't recognize, which would mean his best insult to Magneto has just taken on a new, terrifying meaning.
IN X-Men #3 by Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman The X-Men are still getting used to their new base of operations in Alaska as they trade in their paradise island of Krakoa for the cold “Factory” they now call home. Given the global spectacle of the previous one X-Men storyline, mutants are under intense government control, even after losing everything during the Fall of X era, Cyclops has to deal with it all alone – and it's overwhelming.
Cyclops is basically the representative of all mutants after the fall of Krakoa, and the humans want nothing more than to keep the mutants under control, especially now when the mutants are at their weakest. Cyclops is aware of this, making him a much more cynical and hateful leader. Cyclops is no longer interested in convincing humans to accept mutants, but rather in keeping humans at a distance to ensure the mutants' survival. Unfortunately, as becomes increasingly obvious, Cyclops fails.
Cyclops is slowly becoming Magneto, and Scott himself confirms it with one insult from his past
The Amazing X-Men #18 by Kieron Gillen and Ron Garney
Although Cyclops has not yet plunged into as much villainy as Magneto did in his early years, he begins to see the world the same way Magneto always has, in terms of the coexistence of humans and mutants. Right now, Cyclops is solely focused on separating mutants from humans, even if it means intimidation and fear. Soon, however, Cyclops may decide that Magneto was right all along and become a mutant extremist, just like the man he has been fighting for years.
In truth, Cyclops has always been like Magneto, as proven by his actions during Avengers vs. X-Men. In AvX combined comic The Amazing X-Men #18 Magneto even points out their similarities to Scott, to which Cyclops insultingly replies: “I'm not like you. I win“. The truth is that Magneto never actually follows through on any of his plans, which always leaves him missing out on a significant (and embarrassing) aspect of his character. However, this insult also has interesting implications. If “winning” is the only thing that separates Cyclops and Magneto, how do they differ when Cyclops loses?
Marvel Comics is laying the groundwork to make Cyclops a villain on a magnetic level
Cyclops and Magneto are similar, especially in times of stress and uncertainty for mutants, and the only difference between them is that Cyclops wins when Magneto loses. But now Cyclops definitely isn't winning, which means he's on the verge of becoming Magneto – which is really cool. Their “Factory” already looks like a supervillain lair, and the X-Men are willing to break the law for their own gain. For now, they are acting heroically, but soon the X-Men will be able to act solely in the best interests of mutants, regardless of the rights of humanity. In other words, they would be the villains and Cyclops would be their Magneto-style leader.
