Who actually won when they fought in Marvel Canon

One is a master of the mind, the other is an unstoppable brute, and both are two of the strongest characters in Marvel Comics, leaving fans wondering: who will win in the fight between Professor X and Pontoon? Interestingly, these two have actually fought more than once in Marvel history, and both fights had different results. So in an all-out, power-packed fight to the death, who will win?

The first fight between Professor X and the Hulk took place X-Men: First Class Volume. 2 #5 by Jeff Parker and Roger Cruz. In it, Xavier sends his original X-Men to find and capture the Hulk. This took place before anyone knew who the Hulk was or what he was capable of. However, when he learned how dangerous the Hulk really was, Professor X quickly intervened. Xavier used his alpha-level telepathy to reach the Hulk's mind from afar and, against his will, returned him to Bruce Banner. Game 1 goes to Xavier.

The second time they argued was World War Hulk: X-Men by Chris Gage and Andrea Di Vito. In this book, the Hulk (who had unlocked his Wild Hulk form) hunted down every member of the Illuminati – including Charles. After breaking through the X-Men, Xavier encounters the Hulk in the X-Mansion's courtyard, ready to defeat him with a psychic attack. However, after entering the Hulk's mind, Professor X turns out to be powerless. The Hulk's rage was so great that he built a psychic wall around his mind that Xavier could not penetrate. Match 2 goes to Hulk.

So… who would win in an all-out fight between Hulk and Professor X?

Based on these two examples, it seems like the real winner between Hulk and Professor X would have to be Hulk. Xavier defeated the Hulk X-Men: First Class when Hulk was still young and new to the world. Hulk was still trying to discover his own powers, much like the X-Men themselves at the time, which meant he was probably the weakest he had ever been. Plus, Xavier was an enemy that Hulk couldn't see and didn't even know existed, so he was completely vulnerable to psychic attack.

Compare this to what Savage Hulk fans see World War Hulk. This version of the Green Goliath is a universe-class warrior who has seen many battles – on Earth and beyond – and is much more capable of controlling and understanding his immense strength. Plus, Hulk knows exactly who he's fighting World War Hulkthis is what any hypothetical “fight to the death” would look like.

Hulk's strength has no limits, while Professor X has limits

There is a reason why Professor X is classified as an alpha-level mutant rather than an omega-level mutant: there is a limit to his power. Hulk, on the other hand, can grow stronger forever as long as he has the rage and motivation to fuel him. Therefore, in a “fight to the death” scenario, the Hulk can increase his strength to the point that a psychic wall is built in his mind, as was the case before. World War Hulkand at this point, Xavier would be powerless to do anything to stop him.

Xavier is powerful on a global scale, but at some point he will be exhausted and his powers will no longer serve him. However, Hulk may just grow stronger forever, and his strength lies not only in his body, but also in his mind. So while Professor X and the Hulk have the winning record in Marvel Comics history, the real winner of this battle is “VS”. Pontoon.
