Condemned Trump's campaign Vice President Kamala Harris accused her of trying to “abolish American heritage,” citing her 2019 comments supporting efforts to rename Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples' Day.
“Kamala Harris is your stereotypical leftist. She just doesn't want increase taxes AND Defend the police – He also wants to cancel American traditions like Columbus Day,” Trump campaign national press secretary Carolyn Levitt told Fox News Digital exclusively.
“President Trump will ensure that Christopher Columbus’ great legacy is honored and will protect this holiday from radical leftists who, like Kamala Harris, want to erase our nation’s history.”
Levitt was referring to Harris' 2019 comments when he spoke to voters in New Hampshire about a month after launching an unsuccessful bid for the White House in 2020.

Workers in recent years have worked to desegregate the day, claiming it celebrates colonialism and the genocide of indigenous peoples, in favor of celebrating Native Americans. Activists have also worked to remove statues of Columbus from cities, including demolishing these statues during the 2020 riots.

President Biden 2021 was the first president to officially recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day, but states have taken different approaches to how to celebrate the day.
In 2021, Harris's first year as vice president, he said the United States “should not be ashamed” of its “shameful past” of European explorers unleashing “waves of devastation on tribal nations.”
“Since 1934, every October, the United States has recognized the journey of European explorers who first landed on American shores,” he said. “But that’s not the whole story. It was never the whole story.
“These explorers unleashed a wave of destruction to tribal nations – violence, land theft and the spread of disease,” he said.

An analysis of Harris' X-report for his vice presidency shows that he celebrated Indigenous Peoples' Day exclusively on Columbus Day every year while in office.
