The Congress on Saturday said the murder of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Baba Siddique was a serious allegation of the “devastating” law and order situation in Maharashtra and demanded a thorough and transparent probe into the incident.
Former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique was shot dead by three people in Mumbai's Bandra area on Saturday. Two of the attackers were arrested, authorities said.
The tragic incident has led the opposition to question the law and order situation in the state, where legislative elections are expected to be held next month.
In a post on X, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said Siddique's tragic death was shocking beyond words.
“In this sad time, I offer my deepest condolences to his family, friends and supporters,” he said.
“Justice must be done and the current Maharashtra government must order a complete and transparent investigation. The culprits must be brought to justice quickly. Accountability is key,” Kharge said.

The organization behind Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said, “Shocked, appalled and outraged by the murder of Baba Siddique ji. Siddique ji served people with devotion and worked hard to maintain communal harmony. His death is a great loss for people. Mumbai and Maharashtra.”
The incident is a serious indictment of the deteriorating law and order situation in Maharashtra, Venugopal said in X.
Siddiqui repeatedly reported threats to his life to authorities and suffered despite being under Y-Plus security, he said.
“This shooting, which took place on the street in the middle of a busy market, shows that criminals no longer fear the law in Maharashtra. Even the leaders of the ruling coalition are no longer safe in the heart of their capital. The regime must respond – when important public figures are not safe, how are ordinary citizens safe?” Do you think Venugopal?

Congress media and publicity head Pawan Khera told X, “I am very shocked to hear about Baba Siddique’s murder. I met him in 1999 with Mr. Sunil Dutt. His passing is a personal loss.”
Siddique (66), a former Congressman, was admitted to Lilavati Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Police said she was attacked outside the office of her MLA son Zeeshan Siddique near Colgate grounds in Nirmal Nagar in Bandra East.
Siddiqui represented the Bandra (West) seat in the Legislative Assembly thrice. A prominent Muslim leader in Mumbai, he was also known for being close to several Bollywood stars.
