Julie Bowen has given a sneak peek at what the comedy of the long-awaited Happy Gilmore sequel will look like.

The American actress, 54, played the titular character (Adam Sandler)'s love interest in the original film that later became a cult comedy classic.

But the Modern Family star revealed this week that the team behind the stellar sequel will take a different approach to comedy in the upcoming film.

'I think that's a joke [as a genre] has become less targeted and offensive. I'm not putting it on Adam,' she told the publication.

'I mean sexual slurs or [jokes about] Sexual orientations you no longer have.

You will be afraid of things that were completely accepted 20 years ago. And thank God. I hope I'm not doing those things on screen, but I might be.'

Despite the different approach, Hollywood star Adam, 58, appears to be taking on the sequel to his iconic hit, but some things will remain the same.

Julie assures lead character Happy Gilmore that 'not much has changed' and 'still isn't happy all the time, otherwise she'd be boring'.

Adam steps back into his iconic role as Happy Gilmore and was seen swinging on the driving range while filming scenes in Closter, New Jersey.

Along with his stunt double, Adam looked like he was enjoying the shoot.

The upcoming sequel, directed by Kyle Newsek, marks a return to the 1996 comedy classic where a failed hockey player becomes a golf sensation.

Although a release date has not been announced, the cast is star-studded as Bad Rabbit, with Julie Bowen reprising her role as Virginia Venit, and Christopher McDonald returning as Shooter McGuin.

Released in 1996, Happy Gilmore follows the story of a failed hockey player, Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler), who unexpectedly discovers his talent for golf, leading him to compete in a professional tournament.

The film was a commercial success, grossing over $41 million at the box office on a $12 million budget.

Although it received mixed reviews from critics, it became a cult classic, praised for its humor and memorable performance, cementing Sandler's status as a leading comedian in Hollywood.
