Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes supported the Portuguese manager in taking the most important job in England.
The winds of change are blowing against Manchester City as eight-time Premier League champions have confirmed that Txiki Begiristain will step down as the club's sporting director at the end of the season.
The date of Begiristain's departure also coincides with the end of Pep Guardiola's contract, and the Spaniard's future is in doubt.
The two share a close relationship having worked together at Barcelona before City, and some have wondered whether Begiristain's pending departure will have an impact on Guardiola's next move.
City have confirmed that Begiristain will be replaced by sporting director of football Hugo Vianai, and could finally bring a certain manager with him.

Sports manager Ruben Amorim is assured to do well if he decides to leave Sporting
City boss Pep Guardiola's future is unclear, with succession plans appearing to be in the works in the event of his early departure
If Guardiola follows Begiristain out the exit door, Viana could bring a familiar face to the Etihad in sports manager Ruben Amorim.
Fernandes, who spent three seasons at Sporting before moving to United in January 2020, considers the move a success as he has supported his compatriot to play well in England.
“Since Mr. Amorim came to Sporting, it is one of the teams that is practicing better football,” Fernandes told CNN Portugal. – They played consistently, the transfers were correct and they are in a very good moment. This is a very well-prepared team.
“With regard to Amorim, you can see that he is prepared at this point. Sports training and winning championships is not easy. Sporting went 20 years without winning a championship, and Amorim came and won two already. This shows that the job was done well.
“If he can do the same in England, Spain or anywhere else, you won't know until you get there, but I'm sure everyone can see his ability.”
Fernandes never met Amorim at Sporting, given his move to United came two months before the 39-year-old's arrival. There may soon be a vacancy at Old Trafford and Erik ten Hag will be under pressure.
Amorim, who spent nine years as a player for Sporting's bitter rivals Benfica, led Sporting to the Primeira Liga title in his first full season in charge, after losing just once in the league.

The 39-year-old has led Sporting to two Portuguese league titles in the last four seasons
Last season he helped Sporting win the Portuguese league again, a remarkable feat considering the club's last league title before his arrival was in 2002.
As Sporting boss, Amorim faced Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham and boasts a record of two wins, three draws and a defeat against City.
Sporting are top of the league this season with eight wins in as many games, scoring a staggering 27 goals and conceding just twice.
