CNN dodges Gretchen Whitmer's questions about bizarre viral Doritos video

CNN on Friday dodged Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's question about a bizarre viral video of her feeding a Dorito to a left-wing influencer.

Whitmer appeared on CNN to address former President Trump's critical remarks about Detroit during his speech in the city this week, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign and questions about how she differs from President Biden.

But CNN's Kate Bolduan did not show the extraordinary clip of Whitmer making the rounds online and in the media that the CNN panel had mocked the previous evening.

Liberal journalist Liz Plank posted a video this week of Whitmer feeding her a Doritos chip, and then the camera pans to Whitmer in Harris-Walz camouflage: staring and nodding at the camera, with a cover of “Dilemma” playing in the background. This was part of a viral trend on TikTok of people feeding each other.

It's not clear why this is popular.

Plank's kneeling pose sparked criticism that Whitmer was intentionally or unintentionally mocking people receiving Holy Communion with the video, in addition to commenting that it was strange and disgusting.

“If he doesn't do it, Gretchen Whitmer will,” reads the caption of Plank's Instagram video post. “Chips are not only delicious. The CHIPS Act is a game changer for American technology and manufacturing by increasing domestic semiconductor production to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers! Donald Trump would put that at risk.” The video promotes Plank's interview with Whitmer, who is frequently touted by Democrats as a candidate for national office as governor of a swing state.

When asked for comment, Whitmer's political adviser said Fox News Digital News“The governor’s social media is well-known for infusing her messages with pop culture.”

The adviser added: “Countless people have taken advantage of this popular trend, including Billie Eilish, Kylie Jenner and Stephen Colbert, and the fact that people are paying attention to President Biden's CHIPS Act video proves it works. “Republicans want to distract from the fact that Democrats have invested billions of dollars in the local economy to create record numbers of jobs and import supply chains from overseas, when Donald Trump's policies would destroy those jobs and send them back to China.”

The video was widely ridiculed by conservatives, with some saying it was a mockery of Christians. The board responded that the “freaks” should “relax,” noting that this is part of a viral trend that has nothing to do with Christianity.

CNN discussed the video on Thursday evening, and former Trump 2020 campaign official Marc Lotter noted it at the end of CNN NewsNight.

As a video of Whitmer and the woman played, an incredulous Lotter urged politicians, regardless of their affiliation, not to try to look “cool and young.”

“It's embarrassing,” he said.

CNN anchor Abby Phillip added: “This is kind of ridiculous. Can we agree on this?”
