Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, a Democrat, says Lions are going to the Super Bowl 'without Trump's help'

“Detroit just hosted the largest NFL Draft in history, the Tigers are back in the playoffs, the Lions are headed to the Super Bowl, crime is down and our population is growing. Many cities should be like Detroit. And we did it all. Without Trump's help,” Duggan wrote.

Trump was in Detroit on Thursday to address the Detroit Economic Club. There, the former president made remarks that were considered critical of the city while warning of the consequences of a Harris presidency.

“The whole country will be like: do you want to know the truth? It will be like Detroit,” said the Republican presidential candidate. “Our whole country will be like Detroit if he becomes your president.”

However, Trump also praised the city, comparing it to China.

“Well, we are a developing country too. Just look at Detroit. “Detroit is a more developed area than most places in China,” he said.

Duggan, a 66-year-old Michigan native, led the Lions to hometown success after appearing in the NFC Championship Game and winning the division title last season. Last year, the franchise broke attendance and ticket sales records in a historic playoff run for a team that had only made the playoffs four times in the 20th century.

When Detroit hosted the NFL Draft this spring, Duggan said it was “unique in the way Detroit was perceived across the country,” adding that it was a “game changer for the city” in terms of attracting young people. People want to live in Detroit or do business there, per se Detroit News. This year's draft in Detroit broke a league record for attendance at a single event, with more than 700,000 fans attending.

The Lions followed a historic defeat to the Super Bowl last season after taking a 24-7 halftime lead in the NFC Championship Game.

But now Duggan has boldly announced that the Lions will go to the Super Bowl this year for the first time in their history. Interestingly, he did this by tying Trump up in a line of discredit less than a month before the presidential election in which Michigan will be a decisive battleground.

Trump won Michigan in 2016, becoming the first Republican presidential candidate to hold the state since 1988. But when Joe Biden was elected in 2020, the state reverted to the Democratic side.

However, in the current election cycle, Trump has polled better in Michigan than in his two previous runs for the White House. This has a lot to do with blue-collar and blue-collar voters, which has historically included Detroit's auto industry.

“Michigan's working class is not fooled by Kamala Harris' sound salad and dog-and-pony show. “Her policies, like the radical Green New Deal, are anti-worker,” Team Trump Michigan communications director Victoria LaCivita told Fox News Digital. “His attack on American energy has made the cost of living too high, and his plan to ban gas-powered cars will destroy the backbone of our economy.”

Prominent Michigan Democrats, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, have advised the Harris campaign to focus more on the state as the election approaches, according to a Tuesday Wall Street Journal report. They warned Harris to sharpen her economic message because Trump has done well courting working-class voters in the state.
