Like a Dragon: Yakuza series producer wants a Devil May Cry live-action adaptation

While our staff and Yakuza fans are waiting for Amazon’s Like a Dragon: Yakuza series this fall, another adaptation could happen – a new Devil May Cry live-action adaptation.

Niche Gamer staff had the wonderful opportunity to sit down with the lead stars of Amazon’s Like a Dragon: Yakuza series, which is set to premiere exclusively via Amazon Prime on October 24th.

In the interview held at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, we talked up adapting Sega’s hit series into an ambitious live-action series, which had us wondering if other games could go live-action.

When finding out he was an avid gamer we asked producer Erik Barmack if there was any other games he’d like to adapt into live-action film or a new series.

“If I were to adapt other games my top choices would be Devil May Cry – or for my kids, Among Us,” Barmack said in our interview.

Erik is the former lead of international co-productions at Netflix and now founder/CEO of Wild Sheep Content, the production company behind Amazon’s Like a Dragon: Yakuza TV series, and currently has numerous titles under his belt including the aforementioned Yakuza TV series.

Capcom has been very open to adaptations of their games for decades now ranging from animated movies, television series, live-action movies, and more – so it makes sense for them to adapt one of their most beloved IPs into film or TV.

Elsewhere in our interview Barmack also talked up how good it is to work with partners like Amazon in producing ambitious projects with Like a Dragon: Yakuza, as well as distribute them worldwide to countless fans.

Amazon has been an incredible partner,” Erik said. “What is truly universal about streaming in general is that it’s giving the opportunity for storytellers around the world to get distribution to get in front of tens of millions of fans in ways that wouldn’t have existed 15 years ago.”

He added, “What’s exciting to me is that the show really could only be made now if you wanted to do it the right way, which is with great Japanese actors and talent. And with a partner that is supporting the launch of a great show in hundreds of markets, literally.”
