Some Spongebob Squarepants fans have noticed that the UK version available on Paramount Plus has cut out a joke that’s been turned into a popular meme in recent years.
The meme comes from the 2006 season 4 episode “Dunces and Dragons” wherein Spongebob and Patrick arrive at a medieval themed restaurant/performance similar to Medieval Times. When approaching the actor on guard, Spongebob and Patrick giddily remind the guard to stay in character. However, the guard who’s fed up with his job is tempted to stab himself with his spear before deciding he’d do it “someday, but not today”.
The meme has since been used to joke about overreacting to inconveniences or daily trials.
The meme was likely removed because of its seeming levity towards a very serious mental health issue. It may also be because the guardsman doesn’t have a loicense for that spear.
