An Animal Crossing: New Horizons player made a recent yet funny discovery about the type of animal that their villager, Flora, really is. Despite this player having Flora on their Animal Crossing: New Horizons island for over 2 years now, they still never knew exactly who – or what – they were.

There is a wide range of villagers that players can run into in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This is a staple of the Animal Crossing series and is beloved by many players, with some even going as far as designing their own villagers. Each villager in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is designed after an animal and has a unique personality, catchphrase, and other details that make them who they are. With the hundreds of different villagers that could appear in the game, it makes sense that not every player would know every detail about each unique villager.

Reddit user xXxuhbatzxXx recently learned some new details about their villager Flora. After spending 2 years with Flora on their island, the Reddit user just learned through a short conversation with the villager that Flora is actually an ostrich, despite looking exactly like a flamingo. The Reddit user originally let Flora stay on their island due to their best friend gifting them a matching stuffed animal flamingo a week prior to Flora’s arrival. Thinking it was a cute coincidence that not long after receiving a stuffed animal that was similar in looks to the villager, the Reddit user never questioned that Flora was anything but a flamingo.

Several other users offered some similar stories and explanations in the comments below the original player’s post. Many comments explained that there are only a few types of species that villagers can be classified as in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Using that as a base, several villagers are then designed to look like similar yet different animals compared to that base design. This is a relatively common happening within Animal Crossing: New Horizons and can be seen with other villagers, such as Audie, who looks like a fox but is ultimately classified as a wolf.

Although there are a variety of villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons that are designed as different animals than what they are officially classified as, the ostriches take the cake for having the highest number of villagers like this. That, combined with the clever design of Flora, makes it totally reasonable for players to mistake her for a flamingo. Although the game has been out for over four years now, there is still plenty to discover within Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
