Can you still upgrade weapons in Diablo Season 4?

With Season 4 making a substantial number of changes to Diablo 4, many will soon find out that, while you can visit the blacksmith to repair your weapons and gear, you can’t upgrade them. Can you still upgrade your weapons and armor in Diablo 4 Season 4: Loot Reborn? Well, let’s find out.

Diablo 4: Can you still upgrade weapons in Season 4?

Yes and no. Weapon and gear upgrading has undergone a revamp following the release of Diablo 4 Season 4: Loot Reborn and the introduction of both the Tempering and Masterworking systems. These systems effectively replace the traditional weapon and gear upgrading we have used since the game’s release. And, to be completely honest with you, it’s a long overdue change since upgrading weapons was pretty much pointless unless you had an endgame piece of gear that would be replaced by a new one five minutes after upgrading.

Diablo 4: Tempering, explained

Tempering is somewhat of an upgrade system that, instead of upgrading your stats, will add a new one to your item or weapon of choice. You will need to collect Temper Manuals that are commonly dropped by enemies. Each Manual has an assortment of different stats that you can choose to apply to your items through Tempering. The catch is that, while you can select which Temper Manual to use – they can be used indefinitely -, the actual stat applied to your item is randomized from the Manual’s selection of stats.

This means that rolling the stat that works best for your build is entirely based on luck, and while you can reroll the Tempering process, each item has a set number of rerolls before it becomes locked – up to five rerolls, depending on the reroll value of your item. That is why you should probably Temper your item before you Enchant it.

Diablo 4: How to unlock Masterworking

Masterworking works similarly to the previous upgrading system. You have a total of 12 different Masterworking ranks that will consistently upgrade your item’s base affixes. This will only apply to Unique and fully-tempered – two Tempered Affixes applied – Ancestral Legendary items.

What is the catch? Well, none actually, each rank can be rerolled as many times as you would like. However, to Masterwork your items, you will need to complete The Pit of Artificers, an endgame Nightmare Dungeon of sorts that is extremely challenging and best suited for level 100 characters Once you do complete The Pit, you will be rewarded with Masterworking materials – Obducite, Ingolith, and the infamous Neathiron – which you will use to Masterwork your items.

To unlock The Pit of Artificers, get to World Tier 4 and complete a Level 46+ Nightmare Dungeon. The Obelisk in Cerrigar, Scosglen will then appear and, after clearing your first The Pit run, Masterworking will finally be unlocked at every blacksmith. So, if you want to upgrade your weapons, then prepare your best build – ahem, Necromancer or Sorcerer – for the endgame content, which is the main focus of Loot Reborn.
