  • The Rogue Prince of Persia now has a release date of May 27, 2024
  • The game will launch into Early Access on PC via Steam.

After a slight postponement, The Rogue Prince of Persia release date is nearly here. Originally planned for a May 14 launch, Ubisoft and developer Evil Empire decided to push the original release date back a bit. Launching into Steam Early Access, The Rogue Prince of Persia is a 2D fast-paced action-platforming roguelite set in the Prince of Persia universe.

A scene from an action video game, Rogue Prince of Persia, shows characters in combat with health bars above them. One character swings a large weapon at an enemy on a wooden platform. The game’s early access release date has fans eagerly anticipating this epic showdown.

The Rogue Prince of Persia Early Access release date

The Rogue Prince of Persia Early Access release date is set for Monday, May 27 2024. This release date has been confirmed in a new announcement trailer for the game. It appears that the publisher, Ubisoft, and the developer, Evil Empire, decided to postpone the game’s original release date because of the surprise launch of Hades 2. The delay was announced in a tweet, which reads:

“It’s been a bit of a crazy week for roguelite gamers We’ve decided to let people have their fun with Hades II before we release The Rogue Prince of Persia. We’ll still be releasing later this month, and will be back with a new date on Monday”. Following this, a new release date was announced. Releasing another game in a similar genre , it’s understandable the devs don’t want to go toe-to-toe with the sequel to what is one of the most highly praised games out there.

The Rogue Prince of Persia gameplay details

The Rogue Prince of Persia is a 2D roguelite action-platforming adventure set in the world of Prince of Persia. While it is vastly different from other games in the Prince of Persia series, this spin-off closely resembled Prince of Persia The Lost Crown. The similarities end here, as the gameplay loop is completely different and this roguelite adventure isn’t being developed by Ubisoft like most other Prince of Persia games.

This game is yet another new take on the Prince and the setting for this one sees you explore Persia beset by the Huns. The Prince is killed during the invasion, but he carries a magical bola that saves him from death, reviving him at a desert oasis which will serve as the game’s hub. You will end up here every time you die, as is the nature of roguelite games. Expect to meet plenty of new characters and test out new weapons as you make progress.

As you play the game and die or complete runs, areas will change thanks to the procedurally generated nature of the maps. Each level will reshuffle with every run, changing enemy placements and adding new treasures to discover. During each run, you will encounter ways to enhance the Prince’s abilities by collecting medallions. Put simply, these are going to be like your Boons in Hades 2, granting you specific effects and help or hinder the build you are going for each run.

As a 2D sidescroller, expect plenty of wall jumps, wall-running, and evading traps while you navigate the game’s exploration and combat. Armed with dark shamanic magic, you must kick, slash, and flex your acrobatic moves to get the best of them in this so-called “accessible roguelite”. As with every Early Access launch on Steam, the developers plan to listen to feedback and optimise the game during its time in early access. As you might also expect, what is available at launch won’t be the full game, but more areas are planned alongside new story content and levels.

As per the game’s Steam page, expect plenty of variety with your weapons, too: “Choose from a variety of deadly weapons and equip new medallions each run to unleash devastating effects, giving you the freedom to change your fighting style as you wish. Secondary weapons offer even more options, from bows to shields to grappling hooks. Switch your loadout mid-run to adapt to new challenges”.

Rogue Prince of Persia latest news

How long will The Rogue Prince of Persia be in Early Access for?

As per information on the game’s Steam listing, the question of how long The Rogue Prince of Persia will be in Early Access for has been briefly outlined: “We plan to be in Early Access for around a year, probably a little bit longer. Of course, we have our own plans for extra content, but the whole point of Early Access is to work with you, the community. So, if we need to take a couple months more to improve the game because you’re giving us great suggestions, then we’ll do it”.

Since Early Access games on Steam aren’t full games, what you buy is not the full release. Buying it now will let you play it early and once you’ve bought it, you don’t need to buy it again when it launches. For reference, this is how Baldur’s Gate 3 began it’s life, offering all of Act 1 in its Early Access period. For more upcoming releases in 2024, check out our main release hub so you never miss a new game.
