The Best-Selling Video Game of All Time Could Finally Be Coming to Steam

Highlights

  • Minecraft, the best-selling game ever, may be coming to Steam after Xbox Game Pass hint in 500 Minecoin perk.
  • Players celebrate Minecraft’s 15th anniversary with free items, including character creator items and Minecoins.
  • Steam’s features like Steam Workshop could benefit Minecraft players if the game ever comes to the platform.

Minecraft could be coming to Valve’s PC platform, Steam, after a mention in an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Perk. Minecraft is the best-selling game of all time, surpassing Grand Theft Auto 5 by over 100 million sales. It was released in 2011 by Mojang, and in 2014, Xbox acquired the game and developer for $2.5 billion. Since 2019, Minecraft has been available on Xbox Game Pass, which now includes both its Bedrock and Java editions.

Players have been receiving free Minecraft items for its 15th anniversary since May 15. Each day from then until May 29, players can log in to the Bedrock edition of the game to get a free character creator item. In addition to the in-game celebrations, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members will also be able to redeem 500 Minecoins for use in the in-game shop.

Why Minecraft is Still an Amazing Adventure 15 Years Later

Minecraft still plays well 15 years later, thanks to numerous updates, expansive features, endless multiplayer, and eternally fun gameplay.

In what was likely an error, the 500 Minecoin perk listed Steam as a platform in its description. The disclaimer text showed “Requires Minecraft: Bedrock Edition (for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, or Steam) with Minecraft Marketplace.” However, it has since been changed to remove the mention of Steam. Minecraft had its own spin-off titles on Steam before, like Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends. Minecraft Dunegons ended support last year, as did the other Minecraft spin-off, Minecraft Legends, earlier this year.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Perk Mentions Steam in its Description

Minecraft is one of the few major Xbox titles that is not available on Steam, the largest PC platform in the world. Steam isn’t just a storefront for games, as it includes many features, like achievements, cloud functions, Steam Workshop, and more. Steam Workshop is Steam’s built-in modding platform, which could be useful for players who want to install some of the best mods for Minecraft, assuming it ever comes to the platform. Steam displays player count numbers for each game on the platform, a statistic that other video game platforms rarely share. Minecraft could easily be one of the most played games on Steam, and the functions of the platform could make it a preferred place for fans to play on PC.

The Steam Deck could also benefit from Minecraft coming to Steam. The handheld system has become a popular portable gaming device in the two short years that it has been out. Currently, there are some workarounds required to get Minecraft running on the Steam Deck. If Minecraft were to come to Steam, this would make it much easier to play on the system.
