  • The original PlayStation was a huge success, selling 102 million units and hosting influential games like Final Fantasy 7 and Metal Gear Solid.
  • The fan’s retro cases for modern games received praise for their clever fusion of PlayStation’s classic and modern eras.

Many gamers have found creative ways to pay homage to classic gaming, and a recent example includes one fan of the original PlayStation who created neat PS1-style cases for modern games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Assassin’s Creed Mirage, complete with customized box art. 2024 marks 30 years since the PS1’s debut, so this fan’s project, besides being rather timely, is a fun and practical way to pay homage to Sony’s debut console during a huge milestone year.

Launching first in Japan on December 3, 1994, before expanding to other regions in 1995, the PlayStation proved to be a monumental success. On top of selling a then-record-breaking 102 million units in its lifespan and cementing Sony’s place as a key player in the video game industry, the PS1 played host to several of the most influential games of the late 1990s, with Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night being just a few notable examples. As such, it should come as no surprise that many longtime gamers remain nostalgic for different aspects of the PS1 experience, such as the distinct CD cases that games came in throughout most of the console’s run.

Although PS Plus Premium does not have the most expansive lineup of PS1, PS2, and PSP games, Sony’s service has some great titles.

PS5 Games Get A PS1-Style Makeover

Reddit user ziyad_rahman found a way to apply that nostalgia to their modern PlayStation catalog by creating PAL region PS1 cases for their PS5 games. Said games include Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and the first-party PS5 exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Each case boasts the box art for its respective game resized to fit the cover, along with the PlayStation banner along the bottom and the PlayStation logo in the top right corner. Unfortunately, only the fronts and sides of the cases are shown, so it’s not known if the backs feature the same level of detail.

These aren’t the only games ziyad_rahman has made cases for. In response to commenters on their Reddit post, they shared additional photos of other cases for games including God of War Ragnarok, The Last of Us Part 1 and 2, and, fittingly enough, Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

All in all, their work has been praised for their clever, if somewhat anachronistic, creations, though, as one reply noted, they could have taken it a step further by swapping out the company logos for the ones used during the PS1 days. Even so, the final results stand as an interesting fusion of PlayStation’s classic and modern eras.
