There is a game for every mood that someone might find themselves in, whether they are looking for a big scare, or something to play to help them wallow in sadness. But what if they just want to forget about everything else and enjoy some genuine laughs? They say that laughter is the best medicine, after all.

Comedic games were not created on the PlayStation 2, but they were certainly brought to the next level. As games were getting bigger, so were the games’ details, giving greater opportunity for more laughs. Though that wouldn’t mean much if the games weren’t also fun.

9 Mister Mosquito

Become A Funny Looking Pest

A game about becoming a mosquito and terrorizing an unsuspecting household doesn’t sound real. And yet, Mister Mosquito absolutely exists. Players take control of a mosquito, whose goal is to suck blood from each member of the family while trying not to get swatted out of the air.

Players must fly around the room and boost themselves toward a distracted target when the on-screen reticle turns red. When spotted, a battle ensues where players have to target “relax” points that calm the foe down. It’s a truly hilarious premise for a game that, unfortunately, is held back by its weak script and low replay value.

8 Parappa The Rapper 2

Use The Power Of Rap To Save The Town

Easily one of the more unique games released for the PS2, Parappa the Rapper 2 has a cool 2D paper mache art style to accompany its admittedly wacky story. In Parappa’s second outing, all the food in town is turning into noodles, and it’s up to the gang to figure out why.

Parappa is joined by a cast of silly characters throughout his journey, each with their own zany personality. While the game doesn’t necessarily benefit from having a slightly more convoluted story than its predecessor, the rest of the game remains charming and laugh-out-loud hilarious.

7 Tony Hawk’s Underground 2

Turns Just About Everything Into A Skateboard

Tony Hawk’s funnybone was revealed in the original Underground. but Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 took it to the next level, taking players on a globe-trotting skate competition with well-known jokester Bam Margera.

Players take the classic Tony Hawk gameplay overseas to places like Barcelona, Thailand, and Australia, with the goal of completing challenges in order to beat a rival team in points. What takes this game to new heights are its edgy jokes and secret characters, like an engine-equipped segway ridden by Jesse James, or a mechanical-bull-equipped Steve-O.

6 Dog’s Life

This Game Shows That Dogs Are Inherently Funny

Dog’s Life is a game that has players take control of a dog just to do dog things. While there is a story revolving around an evil plot to turn dogs into cat food, it definitely isn’t the star of the show, but it is ridiculous enough for a few laughs.

Throughout the adventure, players find other playable dogs or complete mini games to earn some delicious bones. Players can even mark their territory or defecat to keep their dog healthy, just like real life. It’s really all in a days work for a dog.

5 The Simpsons: Hit & Run

A Funny Show That Found Its Lane In Gaming

The Simpsons is one of the most successful animated shows ever for its smart, funny, often topical humor, and that’s all on full display in The Simpsons: Hit & Run. The game managed to take Grand Theft Auto’s “do-anything” style of open-world and fit it with a yellow coat of paint, layering the show’s well-known comedic flair on top.

The entire Simpsons family is playable (minus Maggie, of course), each delivering funny commentary as the player goes around town causing havoc. Just like other games in the style, the police are out in full force to give out fines. However, as there is no way to die in the game, the consequences of the players’ sheer negligence are insignificant, adding to the fun.

4 Bully

Rockstar’s Brand Of Comedy, But With Teenagers

Rockstar’s detour into the wild lives of boarding school children is a fan favorite for a lot of reasons. Not least of which are the goofy antics the delinquent main character, Jimmy, can get up to throughout the game. Players must attend classes and otherwise make it through the school year, while the story follows Jimmy’s rise in standing with the various cliques at his new school.

Bully is full of mini games and combat encounters that prove to be an interesting take on Rockstar’s established gameplay formula, but the subtlety of its comedy is worked well into the excellent script that keeps fans clamoring for a sequel.

3 Jak And Daxter: The Precursor Legacy

A Traditional Action Game With A Sense Of Humor

Set in a fictional land riddled by ancient artifacts made by the Precursors, Jak and Daxter are tasked with saving the world from being taken over by Dark Eco. Players traverse through various environments, fighting monsters and completing puzzles to collect Precursor eggs.

The game is a typical action affair done extremely well, with the banter between the two main characters leading to many of its laughs. Every time Jak dies, for instance, Daxter is seen looking down at his friend and delivering a perfectly out-of-pocket quip.

2 Destroy All Humans!

The Mission Is Clear, But Have Some Fun With It

Aliens have been a fascination for years, so Destroy All Humans! asked the question: What if they visited us in the 1950s? The answer is given swiftly by way of its gameplay, where the goal is to kill humans and harvest a sought after organic material from their brain stems.

As a commentary on 1950s America, the game presents humans in a satirical manner. Any NPC’s mind can be read, and most of them have some funny observations to make about the world they live in. In addition, interactions between the main character, Crypto, and his partner, Orthopox-13, effortlessly tickle the player throughout their time infiltrating the very fabric of the United States.

1 Psychonauts

Endlessly Weird And Timelessly Funny

Psychonauts, is a weird game. There’s no getting around that, but if players can get past this, they will be pleasantly surprised by one of the funniest games around. It follows Razputin as he navigates Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp, delving into the minds of its patrons and counselors as he comes to understand his abilities.

It’s a perfect blend of character, story, and level design, with each mission taking Raz inside a new brain to learn what makes it tick. Players will go from taking part in a stage play, to playing a tabletop game, but when all is said and done, their mastery of the games’ abilities will have been tested with a belly full of laughter. It’s a game that has withstood the test of time in every respect.
