Asus has debuted a new compact gaming PC called ROG NUC at CES 2024 in Las Vegas. The NUC, which stands for “Next Unit of Computing,” was originally Intel’s product line before Intel decided to hand over the reins to Asus to develop future NUC systems in July 2023.
First introduced to market in 2013, the NUC is essentially a line of compact, self-contained computers that are small enough to be hidden behind a TV. The NUC has been developed over ten generations, and over time, it has also evolved into something that is upgradable and more than capable to handle modern AAA game titles. With the ROG NUC, Asus is looking to continue that trend, especially now that Asus has had experience in designing small form factor gaming device.
As reported by Engadget, Asus ROG NUC comes in two configurations. The first includes an Intel Core Ultra 7 processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 GPU, while the more powerful model packs in a Core Ultra 9 processor and an RTX 4070 GPU. Both models come in the same 2.5 liter chassis that weighs no more than 800 grams. The chassis also features tool-less design, allowing users easy access to almost all the components inside whenever it is needed.
Other specs include dual-channel DDR5 memory support with a maximum capacity of 64GB, three PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slots, and a whole swath of I/O ports, including a single Thunderbolt 4 port that supports DisplayPort 2.1. Asus says the ROG NUC can support up to four 4K displays, making it a compelling option for those who plan to use it in a multi-monitor setup.
As for the aesthetics, one can easily recognize the ROG NUC as a sleek gaming device through its angular styling. The device can also be arranged horizontally or vertically using an included stand, giving users a flexible option on how to set up and position the ROG NUC. Using it as a living room gaming device is always an option though, as Asus claims the ROG NUC pairs very well with the ROG Raikiri Pro wireless controller.
Given its power and relatively small size, the Asus ROG NUC certainly has the potential to become a console replacement for some users. So far, Asus hasn’t disclosed any pricing or availability information for the ROG NUC. However, considering the premium ROG branding, one might expect the price to be on the expensive side.
