Xbox Cloud Gaming is now a working feature in Meta Quest VR headsets, provided that you have an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

Meta Quest VR headsets, formerly known as Oculus before the Facebook company’s takeover, haven’t been waiting for that long for the integration, especially after the announcement was only in late September.

All players with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate can access “hundreds of games with their Meta Quest headset”, according to Xbox Wire, with notable titles including Starfield and Forza Motorsport. Quite surprisingly considering Microsoft’s penchant for restricting their ecosystem compatibility, “PlayStation 4 controllers and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers are all great options” for use with Meta VR headsets and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Support for PS5 controllers is even coming too, according to Meta’s own announcement.

There’s a free trial available for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate meaning you’re going to be able to try it out before you commit to the $16.99 / £12.99 monthly fee.

Recently released Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 3 will both support Xbox Cloud Gaming, alongside the older Meta Quest 2. Cloud streaming games to VR headsets sounds like an incredibly versatile way to enjoy your favourite titles, though it’s not going to offer as interactive of an experience as you’d expect from made-for-VR titles.

Microsoft have dabbled in VR before, having released the HoloLens 2 and a few other related products. That said, it’s not particularly designed for gaming but rather angled towards commercial use much like the Meta Quest Pro.

It’s going to be interesting to see how rival VR companies react – PlayStation in particular. Sony have long been first movers in remote play gaming, having featured it in the PSP and PS Vita, while their PlayStation Portal also offers a far more polished attempt at this. With Xbox’s partnership with Meta looking like the optimal way to enjoy cloud gaming through VR, could the PSVR 2 see a similar treatment in response?

If you’re interested in trying out Xbox Cloud Gaming through Meta VR, its entry level headsets are available on Amazon for $249.99 at the time of writing, and you can read our Meta Quest 3 review for in-depth insight.
