Jurassic Park Survival Could Fill the Void Left By Dino Crisis

Highlights

  • Jurassic Park Survival looks to be a revival of a previously canceled game, rooted in the original film and riding the current trend of survival horror.
  • Jurassic Park Survival could potentially fill the void left by the absence of the Dino Crisis franchise, which hasn’t had a presence in gaming for almost 30 years.
  • Fans of Dino Crisis may find Jurassic Park Survival to be a satisfying alternative, offering a modern Dino Crisis-style experience.

Of the various world premiers recently revealed at The Game Awards 2023, Jurassic Park Survival‘s announcement was a bit unexpected, as a game of the same name was previously canceled, and many fans assumed it was left in the tar pits. But with the latest Jurassic Park Survival trailer, it seems that it’s being revived. From what can be seen, the upcoming title by Saber Interactive looks to be strongly rooted in the iconography and tone of the original 1993 film, containing direct references to scenes, characters, and locations from it. It also seems to be riding the current crest of survival horror, appearing to have elements of the genre.

Capcom’s Dino Crisis was one of the earlier series to also feature the terrifying beasts. While not as popular as either Jurassic Park or Capcom’s flagship Resident Evil franchise, the games still hold a place in many players’ hearts and minds as excellent survival horror experiences. However, the series hasn’t had much of a presence in gaming for nearly 30 years. Now, Jurassic Park Survival could be set to take Dino Crisis‘ place in the food chain of dinosaur games.

The most recent Jurassic Park game was 2021’s Jurassic World Evolution 2; a construction/management simulator.

Jurassic Park Survival Could Fill the Hole Left By Dino Crisis

Dino Crisis is Facing Extinction

Dino Crisis was essentially Resident Evil, but with dinosaurs. As Capcom developed both concurrently, they resembled each other closely in design and gameplay. The first Dino Crisis released in 1999, the same year as Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. DC1 was generally well-received, though overshadowed by Resident Evil‘s status as the premier survivor horror series. Several more Dino Crisis games followed, each being regarded as increasingly inferior in quality, until the series slid into obscurity by the time of the third and final entry in 2003, lying dormant since.

However, interest in Dino Crisis still persisted, with fans inquiring regularly about the possibility of it receiving the same treatment as the recent Resident Evil remakes. This was usually met with vague and noncommittal responses from Capcom, and nothing substantial regarding it has materialized. With Capcom enjoying the enormous success of the RE remakes, as well as focusing on the next entries, it seems unlikely at this point the developer will turn its attention to the Dino Crisis franchise, even if it had the desire to, and would be well-received by the fans who continue to request it. Dino Crisis is becoming more of a fossil with each passing year.

Jurassic Park Survival Could be the Title Dino Crisis Fans Are Waiting For

As the closest real-life thing to mythical fantasy-like monsters, dinosaurs captivate many audiences, and are a perpetually popular creature to feature in media like games, where the immersion factor can greatly increase the experience. Though titles like ARK: Survival Ascended and even Capcom’s own recent online co-op shooter Exoprimal are dinosaur-centric, they aren’t pure survival horror, and thus don’t provide as intense an experience. Jurassic Park games themselves also vary in quality, and have never really attempted true survival horror.

Jurassic Park Survival, though, could be shaping up to be exactly the kind of game to fill the void left by Dino Crisis in the genre. From the aspects seen so far, fans of the original titles wanting a modern Dino Crisis style experience have good reason to be excited about Jurassic Park Survival. With Dino Crisis remakes or remasters not currently looking to be happening any time soon, Jurassic Park Survival might be the next best thing, serving as a spiritual successor to scratch that particular itch.
