Final Fantasy 16 Producer Doesn’t Expect a Sequel or Spin-off

The first paid DLC for Final Fantasy 16, Echoes of the Fallen, shadow-dropped during The Game Awards for PS5. The Rising Tide is next and launches in Spring 2024, but after that, what’s next for the team? Will there be a follow-up or spin-off to the action RPG?

According to producer Naoki Yoshida, it’s unlikely. That’s because the core development team has already disbanded, and only the DLC team remains. Speaking to Famitsu, he said, “The development team has been disbanded apart from the main DLC team, so at the least, we are not expecting to make a sequel or spin-off.”

While the team learned a lot from creating Valisthea, it’s opting to develop “the next title or consider a new challenge” instead of adding to Final Fantasy 16 for a long time. However, Yoshida isn’t ruling out the possibility entirely. “If you ask me if there will be anything related to Final Fantasy 16 in the future, I don’t know. Since I don’t know what will happen, I’d rather not say anything definite.”

It’s worth remembering that there weren’t plans for the base game to get any DLC. That changed over time, and the fact that the DLC team is still together could mean more content after The Rising Tide. As always, time will tell, so stay tuned for more details.

Final Fantasy 16 is available on PS5, with the exclusivity period ending on December 31st, 2023. A PC version is in the works, though there’s no release window.
