Circana Sales Data For October 2023 Sees Spider-Man Swinging Into Success

US sales analysis company Circana has released its data for October, and the crown for best-selling game has rather predictably gone to a certain superhero.

According to Circana’s Mat PiscatellaMarvel’s Spider-Man 2 was October’s best-selling game overall, which gels with the game apparently crossing the 5 million sales mark recently.

Super Mario Wonder is the month’s second best-selling game, followed by Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which is the first multiplatform release on the list as well.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage has performed admirably for Ubisoft.

On a year-to-date basis, the best-selling games of the year are Hogwarts Legacy and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, according to Circana.

The company’s player engagement tracking data shows that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was the most-played game across PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Counter-Strike 2 taking the crown on PC.

The best-selling hardware platform for the month of October was the PS5 in both dollar and unit sales. The Xbox Series consoles took second place in dollar terms, but the Switch swiped second in unit sales.

Counter-Strike 2 has been super popular on PC. Who’d have thunk?

Interestingly, Piscatella also points to an overall decline in spending versus last year. He attributes this to Call of Duty moving its release month from October to November.

It’s also been a pretty good month for Roblox on PlayStation 5. The “game”, which launched on PS5 and PS4 last month, ranked fourth in Circana’s table of player engagement, ranking behind Call of DutyFortnite, and Spider-Man 2.

Mobile gaming also continues to soar, showing an increase of 2.1% compared to last year. The top five mobile games for October are, according to Circana, as follows: Monopoly Go!Royal MatchRobloxCandy Crush Saga, and Pokemon Go.

It’s well worth reading Piscatella’s full thread if you like nerdy gaming industry statistics, as you’ll find lots more in there about accessory sales, year-on-year comparisons, and more.

Join us next month, when we’ll inevitably be celebrating the absolute dominance of Call of Duty, regardless of the rather negative critical and player reviews it’s received.
