One of the biggest fears of a gacha gamer is that their beloved game will one day be shut down. To be honest, it applies to all live service games in general, gacha or not. Sadly, Dragon Quest Monsters Super Light is due to shut down on January 31, 2024.
10 Years… and Then This
What makes this worse, is that the End of Service (EOS), occurs soon after the game celebrates its 10th anniversary – it’s a shame, to say the least. It’s surprising that it’s even reached EOS, seen as it’s a Dragon Quest game, arguably one of the most popular gaming franchises. Plus, 10 years is quite impressive for the genre, so what happened?
The official Notice of Termination on the Square Enix Bridge website doesn’t expand on the reasons behind the upcoming Dragon Quest Monsters Super Light shutdown and instead goes on to talk about the schedule between now and January 2024.
The Cons of Limited Releases in the World of Gacha
Still, the Dragon Quest Monsters Super Light shutdown announcement only applies to JP servers – because the game never received a Global release. This can often be a sign of an unsuccessful title, as global servers increase the game’s revenue exponentially. Without that added support, a gacha game can struggle, especially with how oversaturated the genre is these days.
The thing is, having a gacha entry in an already-established franchise with a plethora of mainline titles, isn’t always a good plan. Why play a mobile gacha game, when you can play the original console entries? You can’t always bank on nostalgia to make a successful mobile title.
Too Many Games, Not Enough Players
The gacha genre is absolutely crammed with an abundance of games trying to capitalise on the surge in popularity thanks to mainstream titles such as Genshin Impact, Arknights, and many others. However, it’s important to remember that this means the competition is tough, and it can be difficult to stand out these days.
Anyway, I could waffle on about the pros and cons of the gacha genre all day, but I won’t do that to you! I have many thoughts, and it’s safe to say that I’m quite sad to see a Dragon Quest game reach EOS.
